Explainer Video Production
Most people who leave a service page without booking were not unconvinced. They were unsure what they would actually be getting. An explainer video answers that in the time it takes to read a paragraph: how the service works, what happens on day one, what the result looks like, and why it is worth the price. Marmalade Media produces explainer videos in Houston and nationwide.
Confusion Costs More Leads Than Objections Do
A prospect who understands your offer and decides it is not for them was never going to book. The expensive loss is the one who would have booked but could not picture the process, was not sure whether their situation qualified, or could not tell how you differ from the three other tabs they have open. Written copy can answer those questions, but only if people read it, and on a service page most do not read far.
Video is the exception. Wyzowl's annual State of Video Marketing survey has found year after year that most people have watched an explainer video to learn about a product or service, and that a majority say a video has convinced them to buy one. The reason is simple: a ninety-second explainer gets watched to the end by people who would have skimmed the same information in text.
Like all of our video production work, an explainer is planned backward from the page it will sit on and the doubt it has to remove there. That is what separates it from a generic "about our company" video: it is built to answer one specific question, at one specific moment, for one specific buyer.
What's Included
An explainer is a short video with a lot of decisions behind it. Every booking covers the strategy, the script, the shoot, and the editing that turn "here is what we do" into a clear, watchable answer.
Message Strategy
Before anything is written, we work out which question is actually stopping people from booking. Sometimes it is how the process works; sometimes it is whether they qualify; sometimes it is what it costs and why. The video is built around that answer.
Scripting & Storyboarding
A tight, plain-language script written with you, usually under 250 words for a ninety-second video, and a shot list that pairs every line with something worth looking at. You approve both before the shoot day.
On-Camera Coaching
Most explainers are presented by the founder or the person who does the work, and most of them have never been filmed. We use short takes, a teleprompter when it helps, and direction that keeps delivery conversational rather than recited.
Filming, Demo & Screen Capture
Professional lighting and dedicated audio on the presenter, B-roll of the service or product in use, and clean screen recording for software and web-based products, so the viewer sees each step as it is described.
Motion Graphics & Callouts
On-screen text, step numbers, pricing or timeline graphics, and animated callouts over the footage where they make a point clearer. Graphics carry the details that are easy to mis-hear and easy to update later.
Multi-Length Edits & Captions
The complete explainer for your service page, plus short cutdowns for ads, social, and email. Every version is captioned, since much of the audience will watch with the sound off, and formatted for the platform it will run on.
Types of Explainer Video We Produce
The right format depends on what you sell and where the doubt sits. Most businesses need one of these to start, and add others as they see which pages the first one lifts.
Service Explainer
What the service is, who it is for, and what a client gets. The workhorse for a service page, presented by the person who delivers the work, with footage of them actually doing it.
Process & How-It-Works Video
The steps between booking and result, in order. Removes the biggest source of hesitation for any service with a multi-step engagement, from a law firm intake to a renovation to a coaching program.
Product Demo
A physical product shown in use, with the features that matter called out on screen. Pairs naturally with product photography from the same session, so the listing and the video match.
Software & Screen-Based Explainer
A presenter plus clean screen capture for SaaS, apps, and web-based services. The viewer watches the interface while a real person explains what they are looking at and why it matters.
Pricing & What-to-Expect Video
How your pricing works, what is included, and what the first appointment or call will be like. Answered on camera, these questions stop being reasons to leave and start being reasons to book.
FAQ Video Series
The five or ten questions your team answers every week, each recorded as a short standalone clip. Embed them on the FAQ page, send the right one in a follow-up email, and post them to social.
Why We Build Explainers on Real Footage
Search for explainer videos and most of what comes back is animation: a cheerful character, a problem, a product, a smiling resolution. That format exists because it is easy to produce at scale, and it can work for a software product with no physical presence. For a service business it usually does the opposite of what an explainer is for. A prospect deciding whether to trust you with their case, their kitchen, or their health wants to see the person and the place, not a stand-in.
So our explainers are live-action first. Your founder or lead practitioner on camera, in your actual space, with footage of the work being done. Motion graphics, step callouts, and screen capture are layered over that footage wherever they make something clearer, not used instead of it. The result is a video no competitor can buy off a template, because it is built out of the things that are specific to you.
It is also the kind of video that is hard to self-produce well. A presenter explaining a process to a phone in an echoing office reads as amateur, and some of that impression lands on the service being explained. Explainers sit near the top of the list in our guide to which videos are worth hiring a professional for.
How We Script an Explainer That Gets Watched
The temptation with an explainer is to explain everything. That produces a four-minute video that opens with company history and loses the viewer before it reaches the part they came for. We script in the opposite direction, starting from the moment the viewer decides to keep watching or leave.
- Open on the viewer's situation, not on you. The first line names the problem or question they arrived with, so they know within five seconds that this video is for them.
- Answer the question directly in the next twenty seconds. What the service is, how it works, what they get. The details come after the answer, never before it.
- Show, then say. Every line in the script is paired with a shot or a graphic that carries the same information visually, because the viewer who is watching muted still has to come away with the point.
- Handle the one big objection on camera, whether that is cost, time, disruption, or whether their situation qualifies. Unaddressed, it is the reason they close the tab.
- End on the next step. What to click, what happens when they do, and what they will need to have ready. An explainer without a clear next step just informs. Ours are built to convert.
The finished script is typically under 250 words for a ninety-second video. Every project we take on is scripted this way because it is where the result is decided; we cover how that same discipline shapes cost in our video production cost breakdown.
Where Explainer Videos Earn Their Keep
An explainer is a bottom-of-funnel asset. It does its best work at the exact point where someone has enough interest to be on the page and enough doubt not to have booked yet:
- Service and product pages, above the booking button, where a viewer who understands the offer is far more likely to act on it.
- Sales follow-up: a process or pricing explainer sent after a consultation answers the questions a prospect forgot to ask and keeps you in front of them while they compare options.
- Retargeting ads built from the short cutdown, shown to people who visited the page but did not book. The same footage that explains on the page can re-open the conversation in a feed, alongside the video ads that brought them there.
- Onboarding and support: the same how-it-works explainer that wins a client also sets expectations once they have signed, cutting the questions your team answers by hand.

Our Process
An explainer project is front-loaded: most of the work happens in the strategy and scripting, so the shoot day is short and the edit is straightforward.
1. Strategy Call & Script
We start with the page the video will live on and the question it needs to answer there. From that call we draft the script and a shot list, and you review both. Changes are cheap on paper and expensive on the shoot day, so we do not film until the script says exactly what you want it to.
2. Shoot Day
Usually a half day at your location. We film the presenter first, in short takes with a teleprompter if it helps, then capture B-roll of the service, product, or workspace, and record any screen capture needed. Where a client wants a video business card, a testimonial, or product photography as well, we plan them into the same day.
3. Edit, Graphics & Deliver
We cut the complete explainer first, add motion graphics and callouts, then build the short cutdowns from it, with captions and platform formatting on every version. You review the cut before anything is published, and final video typically follows within two to three weeks of the shoot. Project files are retained, so a pricing change or a new step can be updated as an edit rather than a reshoot.
Explainer Video Production in Houston & Beyond
Marmalade Media is based in Houston, TX, and films explainers at client offices, clinics, showrooms, and job sites across the metro. Filming where the work happens matters more for an explainer than for almost any other video, since the whole point is to show a prospect what they will actually experience.
For clients in other cities, we travel, and trips are quoted with travel included. See the portfolio for the standard we hold every shoot to, or review pricing and packages to see how we structure projects before you book a call.

Our pricing page lists a single video at $1,000 to $2,500, and a package of three to five videos at $2,500 to $4,000. An explainer usually lands in the single-video range unless you need one per service or a full set of feature walkthroughs. What moves the number is how much scripting we do from scratch, whether we film at your location or a studio, how much screen capture and motion graphics sit on top of the footage, and how many cutdowns you need for ads and social. Every project is quoted as a flat rate after a strategy call, so the number is settled before anything is scheduled.
Long enough to answer the question that is stopping people from booking, and no longer. For most service businesses that is sixty to ninety seconds on a service page, and up to two or three minutes for a product or software walkthrough where the viewer genuinely needs to see the steps. We script to the question, not to a target length, and then cut a fifteen-to-thirty-second version for ads and social from the same footage.
We build explainers on live footage of your people, your space, and your product, with motion graphics, on-screen callouts, and screen capture layered over it where they make something clearer. That is a deliberate choice: for a service business, seeing the actual person and place you will be dealing with does more to remove doubt than a cartoon can. If what you specifically want is a fully animated character video with no footage at all, that is a different discipline, and we will say so on the strategy call rather than sell you something we do not do.
Usually the person a customer will actually deal with, whether that is the founder, a lead technician, or a practice manager. Viewers trust an explanation more when it comes from someone who clearly does the work, and it makes the video harder for a competitor to imitate. We coach first-time presenters with short takes and a teleprompter when it helps, and nobody has to memorize a page of script.
A video business card is a short introduction to who you are and what you stand for; it belongs on your homepage and about page and in your email signature. An explainer video answers how the thing you sell works and what a customer can expect. It belongs on the service or product page, at the point where someone is deciding whether to book. Many clients film both on the same day, since the two share a location, a presenter, and most of the setup.
Yes. Houston is our home base and most explainers are filmed at the client's own premises across the metro, but we travel for shoots in other cities, and trips are quoted with travel included. Software and screen-based explainers can also be produced with a remote recording of the product and a single on-camera day, which keeps travel to a minimum.
